34 Swarm Defense Books
Where to start with the 34 Swarm
Most defensive coaches I talk to are not looking for a new scheme. They are looking for a front their kids can line up in without thinking about it, one that holds up against a spread team on Friday and a wing T team the Friday after, without a separate install for each one.
That is the problem the 3-4 Fit and Swarm is built for. It is a gap-sound front with simple rules, and the coverage and pressure package sits on top of it without changing what the front seven is being asked to do. Kids play faster when the answer is the same regardless of what they are looking at.
Start with the 34 Fit and Swarm Defensive Overview Book. That is the system: personnel, terminology, fits, coverage rules and the blitz structure. Read that one first even if you already run a 3-4, because the terms in every other book on this page come from it.
From there it depends on your job. If you are running it this season, the 34 Swarm 2.0 Update Book covers what has been adjusted since the original release. If you are building your practice week, the 34 Organizational Manual handles install order, practice structure and how the week gets built. If you coach the front, the 34 Defensive Line Manual is the position book, written to hand to whoever coaches your line. If you are at the youth or middle school level, 34 Youth Defense strips it down to what a younger kid can play fast in. If you want all of it, the Defensive Bundle and the 34 Swarm Combo Pack put the books together.
The PowerPoints on this page serve a different purpose. The 3-4 Defense Overview, the blitz packaging session and the game plan meetings are what you put in front of your staff in the offseason, or what you watch yourself when you have an hour and one specific problem.
What this is not. It is not an NFL 3-4, and it is not a blitz-everything defense. It is a high school front built to be sound first, and simple enough that your third-string nose guard knows where he fits. A defense you have to coach around every week is not doing its job.

Get the 34 Fit and Swarm Defensive Overview Book and read it before you write a single practice plan. Add the 34 Organizational Manual when you start building your install.Books

The Defensive Organizational Manual β is the second book in a series designed to serve as a complete coaching guide to the 34 SWARM defensive system. While it builds directly off the principles of the 34 SWARM defense, this book is intentionally written so coaches from any defensive system can use it to improve how they install, organize, and teach defense.
This is not just an Xβs and Oβs book.
It is a defensive coaching manual focused on HOW to install a defense, how to organize practices, how to structure a staff, and how to prepare a defense to play fast and physical on game day.
Whether you run a 3-4, 4-2-5, or another defensive structure, the concepts in this book help coaches:
Build a clear defensive system
Install that system efficiently
Organize staff responsibilities
Structure practice for defensive success
Keep defenses simple, aggressive, and effort-driven
Teaching Defense in Todayβs Game
Defensive football is becoming increasingly difficult to teach. Rules continue to favor the offense, and many programs struggle to get their best athletes to fully buy into playing defense.
Because of that, defensive organization and culture matter more than ever.
This book addresses both:
The Xβs and Oβs of defensive football
The organizational side of coaching defense
While scheme matters, the number one goal of every defensive coordinator should still be the same:
π Get players to SWARM to the football and play with great effort.
This manual emphasizes:
Avoiding over-complication
Teaching clear rules
Installing with purpose
Building effort and accountability
Great defenses are built on clarity, effort, and repetition, not complexity.

Defensive coordinators
Head coaches overseeing the defense
Position coaches
Youth, middle school, and high school staffs
Coaches looking to simplify install and improve effort
No matter what defensive system you run, this manual helps you organize your defense, your staff, and your practice plan so players can play fast and swarm to the football.
This book is the Youth Version, and it is meant to be a guide to the 34 SWARM system we use. However, I think it will be something all defensive systems can use, as it will break down how to organize a system and practice. I am hopeful that this provides some new knowledge, or even just reminds you of some tips and tricks to improve as a defensive coach.
Defensive football is becoming more and more difficult to teach as the rules seem slanted to the other side of the ball, and often the culture of a program must be solid for the best athletes to want to play on the defensive side of the ball. I hope to give you some help in the Xβs and Oβs and in the organizational side, but donβt forget the number one goal of every defensive coordinator should be getting the players to SWARM to the ball and play hard. Try not to over complicate the defense and focus on getting great effort.
The book covers:
Organization of the defense
Personnel Choices
Alignment
Coverages
Drills
Blitz Rules
Practice Schedules
And more...

The Defensive Line Manual is a comprehensive defensive line coaching resource designed to help any defensive line coach teach players to play fast, play with purpose, and execute their role within a defensive system.
While this manual was built to pair seamlessly with the 34 Swarm defensive system, it is intentionally written so it can be used by any defensive line coach, especially those coaching in:
3-4 defenses
3-front defensive systems
Movement-based defensive fronts
This is not a one-size-fits-all approach β itβs a toolbox that gives coaches the flexibility to teach different body types and skill sets effectively.
Built for the Reality of Defensive Line Play
In many programs, defensive linemen arenβt always the biggest players on the field. Often, they are smaller, quicker, more athletic players β and your system has to fit them.
This manual shows how to:
Coach movement-based defensive linemen
Develop quick, disruptive interior players
Train larger defensive linemen to play an anchor role
Teach technique that allows players to succeed regardless of size
Whether you coach speed, power, or a combination of both, this book gives you tools that translate to game-day performance.
Whatβs Inside the Defensive Line Manual
This defensive line coaching book is broken into four major sections, giving you a complete picture of DL play in a 3-front system.
π‘οΈ 1. Personnel Choices
How to evaluate defensive linemen
Matching body type to role
Teaching players how to succeed in their spot
π§ 2. Terminology & Stunts (3-4 / 3-Front Systems)
Clear, teachable terminology
Stunts and movement concepts used in the 34 Swarm defense
How to teach stunts without confusion
Rules that allow players to play fast
π 3. Reading Blocks
Teaching defensive linemen how to read offensive linemen
Block recognition fundamentals
How to react instead of guess
Playing with confidence and aggression
πββοΈ 4. Drills That Translate
Drills designed for real game situations
Movement, leverage, and strike drills
Anchor-style and movement-style DL drills
Progressions for different skill levels
π Each drill includes QR codes that take you directly to video versions of the drills, allowing coaches to see the techniques taught in real time and apply them immediately in practice.
Why This Manual Matters for Defensive Line Coaches
βοΈ Designed for ANY defensive line coach
βοΈ Perfect complement to the 34 Swarm defensive system
βοΈ Works in any 3-front or 3-4 defense
βοΈ Teaches both movement-based and anchor-style DL play
βοΈ Includes video-linked drills via QR codes
βοΈ Helps defensive linemen play fast, confident, and aggressive
This manual is about preparing defensive line coaches β not just drawing diagrams.
Who This Defensive Line Manual Is For
Defensive line coaches
Defensive coordinators
Head coaches overseeing the defense
Youth, middle school, and high school programs
Coaches running a 3-4, 3-front, or movement-based defense
If you want defensive linemen who understand their role, read blocks correctly, and play with effort and speed, this manual gives you a clear coaching plan.
Format: a printed book, shipped to you.
Every line coach has stood in individual period with fifteen minutes and no plan, and run the same three drills he ran last week because those were the ones he could remember. The kids get reps. They do not necessarily get better.
This is a drill book built to be opened on the field. Stance and first step, footwork for run and pass, hand placement and punch, drive block, reach block, combo and double team, pass protection slide work, and sustained contact through the finish. Every drill has the purpose written out, the teaching cues, the errors you are going to see and how to correct them, and how to progress it as the kid gets better.
Every drill also carries a QR code. Scan it with your phone and you get real footage of that drill being run, with the coaching explanation from actual clinic tape. You are not looking at a diagram guessing what it should look like at speed, and you can hand the phone to an assistant so he sees the same thing you do.
Who it is for: offensive line coaches at youth, middle school and high school. It works no matter what you run up front, because the drills teach technique, not scheme.
What it is not: it is not a blocking scheme book. It will not tell you how to block an odd front or install gap scheme. It builds the technique that makes whatever scheme you run hold up.
