Format: Excel workbook (.xlsx), three tabs, prints on one page.

One page for calling defense on Friday night. The left side is your down and distance game plan against the four formations you expect to see, color coded by down so red is first, green is second, blue is third and yellow is fourth. In the middle of a drive you are not reading a spreadsheet, you are finding a color. The right side is your numbered call menu, blitzes in green and coverages in blue, so a call is a number and everybody on the staff is working off the same sheet.

Underneath the grid there are boxes for key players, plays to stop, key routes, two point conversion and their first play of a possession, plus a block at the bottom for the adjustments you make during the game. Fill those in on Tuesday, look at them on Friday, and keep the sheet. By week six you have a stack of them and you can see your own patterns.

Who it is for: Defensive coordinators and head coaches who call their own defense, junior high through varsity. You do not have to run the 34 Swarm, the sheet does not care what your fronts and coverages are named.

What it is not: It is not a defensive playbook and it will not tell you what to call. It is the one page you hold on the sideline.
