Gun T RPO Playbooks
Format: a printed book, shipped to you.
This is the starting point of the whole system. If you are installing the Gun T for the first time, this is the book, and you can install off it without buying anything else.
Most playbooks are a stack of plays. A coach reads one, likes four of them, puts them in, and finds out in week three that they do not fit together, so when a defense takes one away there is no answer. This one is built the other direction. A small number of plays that share blocking rules and backfield action, run from a lot of formations, so a defense that stops the look has not stopped the play.
Every play comes with the diagram, the teaching points, where it fits in your game plan, and when to call it and why. That last part is what most playbooks leave out, and it is the part that shows up on Friday night.
Who it is for: high school and youth coaches installing the Gun T from scratch. It does not assume you have run any of it before.
What it is not: it is not a season update and it is not the most recent version of what we run. 2.0 through 7.0 are the updates, and they build on this book rather than replacing it. Start here, then add the year you want.
What to do next
- Organizing the install and the practice week: Gun T RPO - Organizational Guide
- The first season update: Gun T RPO 2.0
- Coaching third through ninth grade: Gun T Youth Manual
Where this fits: this is a season update, not the starting point. It is what we ran and adjusted that year, and it builds on the Gun T RPO Playbook instead of replacing it. The books run in order, 2.0 through 7.0. If you are starting from scratch, get the Gun T RPO Playbook first at fbcoachsimpson.com/downloads/guntplaybook and come back to this one.

4.0 is the year the tight end became a real part of this offense. The additions were expanded tight end usage, a full set of new RPOs, and the Y and B Peek reads. Same offense underneath, with more answers for the looks that had been giving us trouble.
Everything in it comes with the install ladder, the teaching progression, the coaching points and the complete play design, so you can put a concept in on Tuesday instead of reading about it and hoping you got the idea right.
Who it is for: coaches already running the Gun T who want the version we ran that season, and coaches building the system who want the tight end material specifically.
What it is not: it is not a standalone system and it is not the current version. It builds on the Gun T RPO Playbook, and 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0 came after it.

✔️ Head Coaches

✔ Offenses that want structure + adaptability
From youth ball to varsity competition, Gun-T 5.0 gives you a system that’s multiple, teachable, and effective.
Format: a printed book, 130 pages, shipped to you.
Youth football has a problem nobody says out loud. Most youth playbooks are high school playbooks with fewer plays in them. The plays still ask a fourth grader to read a defender, or to pull and find a linebacker in space, and then everybody acts surprised when it does not work on Saturday.
This is the Gun T built for third through ninth grade on purpose. Personnel comes first, how to figure out which kid belongs where based on what he can do right now rather than what you wish he could do. Then formations and motion, then a playbook built on rules, so a kid learns why he blocks the man he blocks instead of memorizing eleven separate assignments.
The back of the book is the part most youth coaches need most. How to organize a practice, what the teaching progression looks like, and how to divide up staff responsibilities when your staff is three dads and a grandfather. There is a section on adjusting the concepts as kids move from third grade up to ninth, so the same system grows with them instead of getting thrown out every two years.
Who it is for: youth and middle school coaches, third through ninth grade.
What it is not: it is not the high school Gun T. It is cut down deliberately. If you coach varsity, get the Gun T RPO Playbook instead.
What to do next
- Drill work and practice organization for the same age group: Youth Gun T Organization and Drill Manual
- Defense for the same kids: 34 Youth Defense
- When they move up: Gun T RPO Playbook
You can have great plays, but if your offense isn’t organized, nothing runs well.
Gun-T Organize is the system every Gun-T coach needs — a complete framework that puts your entire offense in order:
➡️ Install
➡️ Practice
➡ Game plan
➡ Communication
➡ Execution
No confusion. No overload. Just structure that lets your team perform.

Format: a printed book, shipped to you.
Quarterback is the one spot where you cannot coach the answer in the huddle. He either knows what he is looking at or he does not, and you find out on Friday night in front of everybody.
This is the reads, written down. Every RPO in the Gun T system with the progression, the defender he is keying, the trigger that tells him which way it goes, and the criteria for when to throw it, when to hand it off and when to pull it. Not the theory of RPOs. The actual reads, in language a sixteen year old can study on his own.
The rest of the book is mechanics and drill work, the footwork and timing reps that make the decision automatic instead of hopeful.
Who it is for: coaches running the Gun T at youth, middle school or high school, and quarterback coaches who want something to hand the kid instead of explaining it a fourth time.
What it is not: it is not a general quarterback development book and it is not a passing game install. The reads in it are the Gun T reads. If you run something else you will get less out of it.
What to do next
- Not running the Gun T yet: start with the Gun T RPO Playbook
- Coaching the outside of the same plays: Gun T Wide Receiver Manual
- The front side of them: Offensive Line Manual
Format: a printed book, shipped to you.
Every line coach has stood in individual period with fifteen minutes and no plan, and run the same three drills he ran last week because those were the ones he could remember. The kids get reps. They do not necessarily get better.
This is a drill book built to be opened on the field. Stance and first step, footwork for run and pass, hand placement and punch, drive block, reach block, combo and double team, pass protection slide work, and sustained contact through the finish. Every drill has the purpose written out, the teaching cues, the errors you are going to see and how to correct them, and how to progress it as the kid gets better.
Every drill also carries a QR code. Scan it with your phone and you get real footage of that drill being run, with the coaching explanation from actual clinic tape. You are not looking at a diagram guessing what it should look like at speed, and you can hand the phone to an assistant so he sees the same thing you do.
Who it is for: offensive line coaches at youth, middle school and high school. It works no matter what you run up front, because the drills teach technique, not scheme.
What it is not: it is not a blocking scheme book. It will not tell you how to block an odd front or install gap scheme. It builds the technique that makes whatever scheme you run hold up.
What to do next
- Need the scheme side too: Offensive Line Manual
- Organizing your position group and your week: Offensive Line Coach Workbook
- A second voice on line play: Chip Seagle - Offensive Line Manual

In this book, Coach Kenny Simpson breaks down 90 Power Gun formations built to give your offense answers without adding complexity. Instead of learning new plays, your players learn simple tags that allow you to line up multiple ways while still running what you already believe in.
This isn’t a list of formations just to look different.
Every formation is explained with WHY it matters, HOW it stresses the defense, and WHEN to use it on Friday night.
What You’ll Get
✔️ 90 total formations using simple Red/Blue structure
✔️ Clear tags that only talk to the players who move
✔️ Built-in answers vs even fronts, odd fronts, and split-field coverage
✔️ Formations designed to:
Create +1 numbers in the box
Improve blocking angles
Force defensive rotation
Isolate your best athletes
Make defenses declare strength early

The Defensive Line Manual is a comprehensive defensive line coaching resource designed to help any defensive line coach teach players to play fast, play with purpose, and execute their role within a defensive system.
While this manual was built to pair seamlessly with the 34 Swarm defensive system, it is intentionally written so it can be used by any defensive line coach, especially those coaching in:
3-4 defenses
3-front defensive systems
Movement-based defensive fronts
This is not a one-size-fits-all approach — it’s a toolbox that gives coaches the flexibility to teach different body types and skill sets effectively.
Built for the Reality of Defensive Line Play
In many programs, defensive linemen aren’t always the biggest players on the field. Often, they are smaller, quicker, more athletic players — and your system has to fit them.
This manual shows how to:
Coach movement-based defensive linemen
Develop quick, disruptive interior players
Train larger defensive linemen to play an anchor role
Teach technique that allows players to succeed regardless of size
Whether you coach speed, power, or a combination of both, this book gives you tools that translate to game-day performance.
What’s Inside the Defensive Line Manual
This defensive line coaching book is broken into four major sections, giving you a complete picture of DL play in a 3-front system.
🛡️ 1. Personnel Choices
How to evaluate defensive linemen
Matching body type to role
Teaching players how to succeed in their spot
🧠 2. Terminology & Stunts (3-4 / 3-Front Systems)
Clear, teachable terminology
Stunts and movement concepts used in the 34 Swarm defense
How to teach stunts without confusion
Rules that allow players to play fast
🏈 3. Reading Blocks

How to react instead of guess
Playing with confidence and aggression
🏃♂️ 4. Drills That Translate
Drills designed for real game situations

👉 Each drill includes QR codes that take you directly to video versions of the drills, allowing coaches to see the techniques taught in real time and apply them immediately in practice.

✔️ Perfect complement to the 34 Swarm defensive system
✔️ Works in any 3-front or 3-4 defense
✔️ Teaches both movement-based and anchor-style DL play

Who This Defensive Line Manual Is For
Defensive line coaches
Defensive coordinators
Head coaches overseeing the defense
Youth, middle school, and high school programs
Coaches running a 3-4, 3-front, or movement-based defense
If you want defensive linemen who understand their role, read blocks correctly, and play with effort and speed, this manual gives you a clear coaching plan.
The Defensive Organizational Manual – is the second book in a series designed to serve as a complete coaching guide to the 34 SWARM defensive system. While it builds directly off the principles of the 34 SWARM defense, this book is intentionally written so coaches from any defensive system can use it to improve how they install, organize, and teach defense.
This is not just an X’s and O’s book.
It is a defensive coaching manual focused on HOW to install a defense, how to organize practices, how to structure a staff, and how to prepare a defense to play fast and physical on game day.
Whether you run a 3-4, 4-2-5, or another defensive structure, the concepts in this book help coaches:
Build a clear defensive system
Install that system efficiently
Organize staff responsibilities
Structure practice for defensive success
Keep defenses simple, aggressive, and effort-driven
Teaching Defense in Today’s Game
Defensive football is becoming increasingly difficult to teach. Rules continue to favor the offense, and many programs struggle to get their best athletes to fully buy into playing defense.
Because of that, defensive organization and culture matter more than ever.
This book addresses both:
The X’s and O’s of defensive football
The organizational side of coaching defense
While scheme matters, the number one goal of every defensive coordinator should still be the same:
👉 Get players to SWARM to the football and play with great effort.
This manual emphasizes:
Avoiding over-complication
Teaching clear rules
Installing with purpose
Building effort and accountability
Great defenses are built on clarity, effort, and repetition, not complexity.
What This Defensive Coaching Manual Covers
This book walks coaches step-by-step through how to build, install, and manage a defensive system from start to finish.
🛡️ Defensive System & Philosophy
Defensive Theory – how and why the system works
Personnel Choices – putting players in the right roles
Implementing the Defense – teaching progression and install order
🧠 Coaching Staff & Organization
Build Your Staff – defining roles and responsibilities

Blitz Rules – teaching pressure without confusion

This manual gives you systems, templates, and structure — not just ideas.
Why This Book Matters for Defensive Coaches
✔️ Teaches HOW to install a defense, not just what to call
✔️ Helps organize coaching staff roles and responsibilities
✔️ Improves defensive practice efficiency
✔️ Builds clarity for players and coaches
✔️ Keeps defenses aggressive without being complicated
✔️ Works for youth, middle school, and high school programs
If you’ve ever felt like your defense had good ideas but struggled with execution, communication, or consistency — this book is built to fix that.
Who This Defensive Manual Is For
Defensive coordinators
Head coaches overseeing the defense
Position coaches
Youth, middle school, and high school staffs
Coaches looking to simplify install and improve effort
No matter what defensive system you run, this manual helps you organize your defense, your staff, and your practice plan so players can play fast and swarm to the football.
This book is the Youth Version, and it is meant to be a guide to the 34 SWARM system we use. However, I think it will be something all defensive systems can use, as it will break down how to organize a system and practice. I am hopeful that this provides some new knowledge, or even just reminds you of some tips and tricks to improve as a defensive coach.
Defensive football is becoming more and more difficult to teach as the rules seem slanted to the other side of the ball, and often the culture of a program must be solid for the best athletes to want to play on the defensive side of the ball. I hope to give you some help in the X’s and O’s and in the organizational side, but don’t forget the number one goal of every defensive coordinator should be getting the players to SWARM to the ball and play hard. Try not to over complicate the defense and focus on getting great effort.
The book covers:
Organization of the defense
Personnel Choices
Alignment
Coverages
Drills
Blitz Rules
Practice Schedules
And more...

One Play, Many Ways — Concept-Based Offensive Football System & Play-Calling Guide
One Play, Many Ways is a coaching book built on a simple but powerful premise:
👉 Offenses built around concepts — not just plays — are more versatile, easier to teach, and easier for players to execute.
This book shows offensive coordinators and coaches how to build an offensive system based on conceptual thinking, allowing players to understand the why behind each call — not just where to line up.
When players understand the concept of a play, they can:
Adjust faster on the field
React to defensive changes
Play with confidence and clarity
Take ownership of the offense
That understanding creates buy-in, keeps the offense aligned, and helps offensive coordinators communicate more effectively.
Why Concept-Based Offense Works
Traditional playbooks often overwhelm players with volume.
Concept-based offenses focus on ideas, rules, and objectives.
This book explains how:
Teaching concepts simplifies learning
Players adapt faster to defensive adjustments
Offenses stay flexible without adding plays
Communication improves across the entire unit
When everyone understands the goal of the play, the offense plays faster and more connected.
What’s Inside the Book
With 170+ pages, One Play, Many Ways walks coaches through how to see, teach, and organize offensive concepts, rather than memorizing isolated plays.
Inside you’ll learn:
How to teach offensive concepts clearly
How to build a system players understand
How to create versatility without complexity
How to connect formations, motions, and tags to one idea
How to keep the offense on the same page
This is a thinking coach’s guide to modern offensive football.
How the System Is Taught
Coach Simpson uses:
3 core run plays
3 core pass concepts
to demonstrate how conceptual thinking is taking over modern offenses.
From those six ideas, you’ll see how to:
Build multiple variations
Attack different defensive looks
Adjust without adding confusion
Keep teaching consistent all season
This approach works for:
Spread offenses
Gun-T / hybrid systems
Pro-style concepts
Youth through high school football
Who This Book Is For
Offensive coordinators
Head coaches who call offense
Quarterback coaches
Youth, middle school, and high school staffs
Coaches looking to simplify teaching without limiting answers
If you want an offense that is simple for players, adaptable against defenses, and built on understanding, this book gives you the framework.
Why Coaches Use One Play, Many Ways
✔️ Focuses on concepts over play volume
✔️ Improves player understanding and buy-in
✔️ Creates flexibility without overload
✔️ Helps offenses adjust faster on game day
✔️ Reinforces modern offensive thinking
Great offenses aren’t just called — they’re understood.

Format: a printed workbook of more than 200 pages, plus a digital editable version that works in PowerPoint, Google Slides and Pro Quick Draw.
Defense has gotten harder to teach. Offenses change faster than they used to, you get less practice time than you used to, and the communication has to be right or a kid takes the wrong fit and it is six points. Most defensive coordinators are not short on knowledge. They are short on a place to put it.
This is that place, on paper. You work through your defensive structure, your install order, your practice plan and your call sheet before the season starts, so that in October you are filling in a framework instead of rebuilding one every Sunday night.
The digital version matters more than it sounds. It is editable, so you change the language to match what you already call things rather than teaching your kids somebody else's terms.
Who it is for: defensive coordinators at youth, middle school and high school, and head coaches who call their own defense.
What it is not: it is not a scheme book. It will not teach you a front or a coverage. It organizes whatever you already run.

Version 6 of the Gun-T Playbook is here — and it’s your most complete offensive playbook yet.
Built for coaches who want an offense that teaches clearly, installs fast, and executes with confidence, Gun-T Playbook 6 expands on everything you’ve come to trust from this system — plus major upgrades in:
🚀 Expanded RPO reads and progression keys
🎯 Tight end usage that stresses defenses
🌀 Motion and alignment leverage concepts
📊 Quarterback progression installs
This isn’t a minor update — this is the most advanced Gun-T system you can run on Friday night.
🏈 What’s New in Gun-T Playbook 6
🔥 Expanded RPO Packages with Clear Reads
The RPO game in Playbook 6 is built to stress defenses horizontally and vertically.
• Quick game RPOs
• Mesh & bubble based reads
• Edge stress reads with progression ladders
• QB keys tied to specific defensive fronts
Your quarterback gets clarity, confidence, and structure — not chaos.
🎯 Tight End Concepts That Win Matchups
In Playbook 6, tight ends are contributors every down, not just blockers:
✔️ Inline power schemes
✔ TE motion to create leverage
✔ Play-action passes that exploit linebacker reads
✔ Route options that stress coverage
Make your tight end a mismatch weapon.
🌀 Motion & Alignment Advantage
Motion isn’t decoration — it’s a tool to create leverage and numbers:
• Jet motion stress sets
• Flow motion to pull defenders
• Pre-snap alignment advantages
• Quick glance keys for your QB
These motion concepts force defenses into decisions before the snap.
📊 Quarterback Progressions & Reads
